Stupid anarthrous noun phrases.
Have you ever picked up an eggcorn? I found one that's a hoary chestnut.
rift >> riff
For example, I include this apocryphal statement, attributed to Christ:
There is no riff between the president and I.
It's a very common eggcorn. The First Repertoire For Alto Saxophone, lists the song Rift-Riff. Composer Beverley Calland seems to pay musical tribute to this conflation.
Searching for eggcorns has become a popular pursuit. At Language Log, they are still on the eggcorn beet.
[If the pop culture reference in this post's title has eluded you, read Mordac visits Geoff Pullum and Renowned author Dan Brown staggered through his formulaic opening sentence.]
Update: rift >> riff has been included in the database. Also, the eggcorn fun continues with a follow-up to this post: Eggcorn re-ducks.
TiddlyWiki in the news.
Jeremy Ruston and his brainchild, TiddlyWiki, are featured in a Wall Street Journal Online column and a series at the loose wire blog. Technology columnist Jeremy Wagstaff posts all the extra stuff that he couldn't squeeze into today's piece.
With my recent experiment in fusion cuisine, using Blosxom to produce a TiddlyWiki, I had occasion to write to Jeremy Ruston. He looked into BloTid and was kind enough to reply, writing: "[D]elighted to see BloTid. I very much like the design pattern of using TiddlyWiki as a template within a more elaborate content management system."
That's high praise, considering the source. I can't deny that I'm in awe of Jeremy's ingenuity as a developer.
